The 2011 world kayak championships are rounding the corner very quickly and taking place in Plattling, Germany. The championships start on June 20th, 2011 and will finish up on June 26th, 2011. This worlds will be unique in the fact that we are about to witness a huge change in our sport and that is bringing carbon fiber kayaks into the mix on the largest scale yet. As rumours are floating around already, it would seem that if you don;t have a carbon fiber boat for this years worlds, you might just be left in the dust. This comes at a time when the natural evolution of our sport is coming to a small head and there are a few people out there trying to get the most out of their crafts, not to mention there are a few more manufacturers out the also, Fluid, Vajda, Jackson all producing carbon boats on some level. It should be super interesting to see how our sport will change this year because without a doubt, carbon is the way to go at least in a competitive setting.
The Plattling site looks amazing and some of the boys and girls out there have also made it look amazing, Peter Csonka has been a guy that I have been keeping my eye on as Peter is obviously at the forefront of European freestyle and not a bad guy either! I hung out with Peter a couple years back when he was up here on the Ottawa training with Tyler Curtis for the last worlds. Needless to say I think carbon is going to be the way to go this year and will be the future of competitive boating.
As for training this year, I will be doing the usual and chilling TC "Tyler Curtis" and boating on the big waters of the Ottawa River in our back yard so stay tuned for updates there. We are also planning a whirlwind tour of the states to go hit the shops up for his sponsors and mine and make sure everyone on the retail level is happy. We also get to meet a bunch of new, usually super cool people too. My training now after my return from training for 3 months in Costa Rica consists mostly of competitive hockey a couple times a week (my 2nd passion) skating on the Ottawa River in my back yard a couple times everyday and then the other basic Rocky style training regime, push-ups, sit-ups, basic weight training, plyometrics and a little bit of yoga in front of my fireplace with my better half Lisa. Man I suck at yoga, I have a difficult time calming my brain waves, I think some people call it A.D.D. Anyways I'll rap this post up for now but stay tuned and I will keep everyone up to date on my training.
In the meantime, check out this video of skating on the Ottawa River with my family this week. Ciao for now.
